The 12th edition of the Valletta Baroque Festival is in full swing, captivating audiences from January 11th to January 28th, 2024. Organised by Festivals Malta in collaboration with Teatru Manoel and under the artistic direction of Kenneth Zammit Tabona, the festival features over thirty outstanding concerts.
Immerse yourself in the exploration of Baroque music as the festival unfolds over three weeks, enchanting audiences in picturesque venues across the island. Cherished locations include Verdala Palace in Siġġiewi, San Anton Palace in Attard, and St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.
Commencing on January 11th at St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, the festival kicked off with a grand performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's "St John Passion" BWV 245, led by the Valletta Baroque Ensemble (ViBE) and Kor Malta under the musical direction of Riccardo Bianchi.
As the festival continues, don't miss the closing finale on January 28th, featuring an adaptation of Pergolesi's "La Serva Padrona" for a younger audience, with musical direction by Sarah Spiteri and scenic design by Jacob Piccinino.
The festival's exceptional lineup includes internationally acclaimed musicians such as Robin Pharo, Zefiro Ensemble, Alon Sariel, Holland Baroque with Wu Wei, Lucile Boulanger, Vox Luminis, and Les Contre-Sujets.
Artistic director Kenneth Zammit Tabona emphasises the festival's eclectic nature, blending traditional early music disciplines with rock and jazz, making it one of Europe's most appealing festivals. The event, known for its strong international reputation, consistently ranks among the top ten festivals of its kind in Europe.
Local talent is also prominently featured, with performances by Festivals Malta's Valletta Baroque Ensemble (ViBE) and Abos Project & Consort, adding a distinct Maltese flavor to the ongoing festival.
Returning favourites like the BaRock concert led by The Rock Troupers and ProMużika Ensemble, along with collaborations with The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra performing Bach's keyboard concertos, promise a varied and captivating experience for attendees.
