Teatru Astra’s forthcoming Il Trovatore, billed for the 24th and the 26th October 2019, is another promise of the grandeur fit for the return of Verdi’s masterpiece after a 23 year absence. The theatre has just announced top international singers and local artists for this year’s production.
Valeriy Georgiev, will star in the title role of the troubadour Manrico. He has performed extensively throughout Europe, including Germany, Italy and Belgium, among others, and is considered to be one of the leaders in the list of Verdian tenors.
Accompanying him will be soprano Joanna Parisi featuring as his beloved Leonora. Ms Parisi has been named as ‘one of the next generations of great opera singers.’
Plamen Dimitrov, another new name for Astra, will be singing the role of the evil Count di Luna, while Sania Anastasia, a heavy-weight mezzo-soprano of international calibre, will feature in the part of the mysterious Azucena. Anastasia, is still the talk of the town for her iconic interpretation of Amneris in Aida, produced by Teatru Astra in 2016.
Other roles are assigned to Carlo Colombara, who will be making a most welcome comeback as Ferrando. Colombara is considered to be one of the most important Italian Verdian basses in the world. He has performed at the most prestigious theatres in the world, including Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan (US), Bolshoi Theatre (Russian Federation), Teatro Alla Scala and Covent Garden (UK). Local artists include up and coming soprano Marvic Baldacchino, who will be making her debut at Teatru Astra as Ines, while Noel Galea, a household name in local operatic productions, is being entrusted with the part of the ‘Vecchio Zingaro’. Mario Portelli, will be interpreting the part of the Messenger.
The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will be under the direction of Mro John Galea while the artistic direction will once again be in the able hands of Enrico Stinchelli.
The opera is supported by the Gozo Cultural Support Programme managed by the Arts Council Malta and Ministry for Gozo. Online booking is available on www.teatruastra.org.mt. The theatre’s helpdesk can be reached on 2155 0985 and via e-mail on email@example.com.
