A section of Strait Street in Valletta, one of our capital city’s most popular night spots, has been embellished with a kaleidoscopic canopy of illuminations created by the island’s preeminent glassmaker, Mdina Glass.
The installation was commissioned by the Valletta Cultural Agency (VCA) and forms part of their official programme of varied summer activities. It consists of over 100 handmade fittings and took nearly 3 days to install.
The VCA’s intention of putting the display up was to bring an additional splash of light and fun to the area as we ease out of recent restrictions, and to serve as an attraction to draw people into the pedestrianised street. It has certainly made an instant impact with crowds of visitors from near and far stopping to take in the sight, wielding their smartphones and cameras to take photos.
A similar installation was created in Strait Street for Notte Bianca a few years back, so the concept already proved itself as a popular initiative. Back then the lights were only up for a couple of days, but this time they will be available to see and enjoy until early October 2020.
